Our History
Five decades of Compassionate Care
Lakewood Center’s story began in 1970 with the founding of the La Amistad Foundation, originally established as a supportive residential setting for adolescents living with serious mental illness. As the needs of the community evolved, so did our mission. In 1989, that journey became Lakewood Center, with a renewed focus on providing compassionate, long-term residential care for adults living with chronic serious mental illness.
Today, Lakewood continues that legacy by offering something increasingly difficult to find: a place where adults with serious mental illness can receive consistent, individualized support without the pressure of a predetermined discharge timeline. Residents are given the time, stability, and relationships they need to build meaningful lives, with care that can continue for as long as it remains beneficial.
Rooted in Community, reflects both where we come from and what we strive to provide every day. Lakewood is more than a place to receive care, it is a community where residents can experience connection, belonging, support, and dignity while living with serious mental illness.
More than five decades after our founding, our purpose remains centered on creating a stable and compassionate home where people are known, supported, and given the opportunity to thrive at their own pace.
